Let your child create their own path in life

These days, parents will often urge their children to choose subjects that apply to a specific vocation. This could be, for example, biology so that they can study medical practices and become a doctor, or business studies so that they can go into management.

Often, this is just because we want our children to do well, although sometimes we also do this to realize our own unfulfilled ambitions. However, if a child is following a path that they do not feel passionate about, they are not going to feel engaged or motivated to learn. We should be encouraging our children to consider what they would like to do, offering our support as they discover where their strengths lie, so that they create a sense of purpose in their lives.

When it comes to deciding what to study at university or which subjects to take at school, sit down with your child and put a list together of the things they are good at and are interested in. Try not to push any subjects, including those associated with financial success. This doesn’t necessarily create a path that is suited to your child’s interests and abilities.

Instead, help your child to think outside of the box. If they are interested in food and diet, look at related courses in science or nutrition. Discuss the various job options that could be open to them, such as dietician, nutritionist, food blog writer, or social media marketing for a nutrition company. Come up with ideas together, but try not to influence your child, and let them reach a final decision on their own—one that will allow them to pursue their passions.

You could also inspire your child by helping them to find a mentor. If they display a curiosity about how buildings are constructed, and one of your family members is an architect, invite this person round to discuss why they first became interested in their job, what it involves, and what steps they took to pursue it. Having a mentor to look up to will provide your child with an understanding of what it takes to lead a fulfilled life, and how to follow a particular passion through to adult life.

A sense of purpose is essential for achieving a happy, satisfying life. Do not try to direct your child’s future. Instead, encourage them to create their own path by studying things they are interested in and have a passion for. A mentor can also inspire them to work toward achieving their dreams.
